Water-based ink markers on paper

The surface theme, taken literally.

A cartoon-style (mostly) pointillism piece depicting a man surfing on the literal surface of a planet. Seems I can’t get rid of the space theme throughout these years. It’s just so damn lovely.

The piece was done using ink, specifically water-based permanent markers of various thickness. The planets were done in pointillism, to give them a more dimensional and realistic texture (planets are naturally pretty spotty). Everything else was done using thick, crisp strokes, to keep it looking cartoonish. I tried to balance the positive versus negative space, which was done by controlling the density of dots on the planets, as well as how many acrylic stars were painted onto the sky. Action lines were painted around the surfboard, to emphasize the person’s fast motion. The surfer is saying “Righteous!” because hey, this is pretty righteous. Also, what’s a cartoon without a speech bubble?

My only complaint is that I was stupid enough to forget the E in “righteous”. Can you tell? I tried to fix it. Oh well, goes to show that you should never rush into a project (until you’re sure you’re ready). But hey, nobody’s perfect. I had fun and all things considering I kinda like this piece. The planets were more swirly than expected and I think that’s awesome.
